Shortly after I had my daughter my hair started to fall out. But only the front right side had become as thin as Nicole Richie, circa 2006. The rest was healthy.
A friend of mine suggested a weave until my hair grew out. I agreed a weave could be a good solution, but up until that very moment, my idea of weaves were for women who had had issues with their hair and I guess I had now become one of them.
So with my naive, narcissistic attitude safely stored in my Louis Vuitton Speedy bag, I proceeded to a high profile salon in Brooklyn and there began the tale of my brief addiction to hair weaves.
It all started with glued hair pieces to hide the front of the thinned out spot on my head. Then it quickly turned into a full glued head. When it was time for my next appointment, I pulled the glued pieces out while I sat in the cab, late but quickly heading towards the salon for the 10am appointment. Three weeks later, clumps of hair dramatically fell out.
"You didn't know you should never do that," my friend screamed when I told her how I permed my hair within 30 minutes of pulling the glued weave out.
I immediately went back to the salon and the unanimous decision was a full head of sewn in weave, shoulder length of course. Seven hours later (please feel free to ask any hairstylist why it takes 7 hours to do a weave, unfortunately I cannot answer that question) my hair was a little passed my shoulders, straight, thick and effortless. I loved it! I wrapped it faithfully ever night. I styled it with my trusty flat iron, curled it with steaming hot rollers and roller set it once a week with the Dominicans.

This happened for a year. Until one day I was just exhausted from hiding tracks, excessively combing and brushing hair, and wrapping long locks at night had now become tedious instead of fabulous. With a little help from the 2008 Grammy red carpet. (see February 11th blog http://www.bvonstyle.com/2008/02/11/chop-chop-short-hair-looks-at-the-grammys/) I decided to go natural with a short cut and long bang.
So here I am with hair as short as Zac Efron. I love it! For now...

you must take care of your hair and it should be natural and healthy @ all times especially if you are going to wear a weave. A weave looks good on you but you cannot wear it on freshly perm hair and you should never glue it in. I reccomend you start fresh and then corn braid your natural hair (not permed hair)and sew it in. You should always remove the weave every 1 or 2 months. Wash and treat your natural hair then redo. But why does your weaves take 7 hours? Mine does not and it looks just as good! Give the weave another chance. I think it works better for you, but i do not reccomend wearing weaves on top of permed or damaged hair.

Girl, you are beautiful from the inside out. It shows through your blogs. Weave or no weave, like who you are becoming and enjoy the life God has given you. Ia almost 40 and have always been plain, cute, but plain. No weaves, no flashy anything, definately no dyed hair. Last week I got a cute haircut and my stylist added some golden brown tracts to style so I could try a little color. Honey, I LOVE it! My husband loves it too! ;-)

It looks great short. Not many sisters can pull that look off and most are too insecure to try. Stop hiding under the weave there is nothing wrong with your hair. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. We have accepted and embraced the european standard of beauty and try to hide our afrocentric features under blond weaves, and blue contacts, etc. God made you perfect and you should take care of what you got. Black women are a trip, sitting in the food stamp office with a weave and such. I might sound old but I am only 33. I'm not fat or ugly or bald, just perfect the way I am.

34. We are the only people who hate ourselves (our hair)so much we make millions for others. Straightening, weaving, and wigging it is all too much. We wear flammable, polyester, even yarn hair. What is so ugly about plain black hair on a black woman. Why are you in dread of nappy. It is really sad in the saddest way.

You look striking with the natural hair. With the weave you just blend in. My advice to you is learn to take care of your natural hair first. It's hard, but then again, anything worth having is worth working hard for. Once you learn what your hair likes, it will be a lot easier to work the weave into your routine.

Everyone's experience about weaves is going to be substantially different from person to person. I wore a weave for about a year, and after it was taken out, my hair was badly damaged. It was very brittle, and so thin that you could see my scalp, which is a huge feat for someone who has very thick hair. It took several months and many bouts of hair treatments to get my hair right. I then began to wear micro braids and my hair grew so fast that I was getting my braids redone every 3 months.
I guess that everyone has to do what’s right for them. To each its own!

Your weave looks better then your short cut but it looks like you could use a better grade of hair which will cost you considerable more but you will get a better results. I have worn a weave for many years and just love it but I do buy the more expensive hair and as long as I go to the salon on a regular basis I see no reason to go back to worning my own hair.

WOW! Y'all are IGNORANT! It's just hair. Fried, Dyed, or Laid to the side. I did weaves heavily in High School ( early 90's) Long permed hair to short permed hair back to long permed hair to braids in college and then one day cut my beyond shoulder length permed hair off and went au natural. I've been natural for 3 years are it's liberating and gorgeous! My hair is healthy and beautiful. HAPPY 2B NAPPY!!!
