What Time Is It?

Most people say you can learn a lot about a man by looking at his shoes but between you and me, the true revealer of a man is his watch. Everyone always runs to spend money on fresh footwear to impress but its the watch that really tells what a man spending limits really are.

Timekeeping began with the shadow clocks of Egypt. Simply a long stem protruding out of the ground, it was used to measure the hours of the day based on the position of shadows over special marks. Unfortunately this device was no good because when the sun wasnt out or there was a cloudy day, no one knew what time it was.

Then the Egyptians developed water clocks which consisted of a bowl with small holes in its bottom, which was floated on water and allowed to fill at a near-constant rate; markings on the side of the bowl indicated elapsed time, as the surface of the water reached them.

Next came the hourglass which was basically two vertically aligned glass chambers connected by a small opening. When the hourglass was turned upside-down or rightside-up, grains of sand fell at a constant rate from one chamber to the other. Thats right the Egyptians made that too! Go Africa!!!

So sundials, more water clocks, escapements, armillary sphere, candle clocks and incense clocks were invented during the next 3000 years. In the 1400s, the European's aggressive navigational efforts forced the need for mobile time telling mechanisms. As they travelled and conquered lands, they needed to know what time it was. Eventually the pocket watch was developed by Peter Henlein in 1524 and it grew into the watches we have today.

Now the watch started off as a time keeping piece but it grew into a fashion statement of status and wealth. As seen by the 1990's love for Rolex watches, having a nice watch can be evidence of whats in your bank account. You can lease a car, get a mortgage for a mansion but no one is going to give you a watch before you pay for it in full.

Anyway brothers and sistas, check out some cool new watches and remember, you have to pay for quality but at the same time live within your means. Brothers please make sure you get the watches adjusted to your wrists. Its only 5-10 bucks at any jeweler or mall watch shop.
