Michelle Obama wearing Spring 2009 Thakoon with husband Sen. Obama
The Democratic National Conevntion ended with a bang last night: an amazing speech delivered by Sen. Barack Obama, the first African-American presumptive Democratic nominee after clinching the nomination ahead of the final count. When the crowd of 75,000 gave a thunderous applause at the history-making event shortly after his wife Michelle Obama came out with their two daughters and VP pick Joe Biden with wife, I too went into a frenzy... but for her amazing Fall ready floral print dress by Thakoon. Lady O is killing the fashion game.
Last night's dress is a pre-Spring 2009 number created by Thai designer Thakoon Panichgul. As to how he felt about Lady O in his design: "I am incredibly honored that Michelle Obama chose to wear a dress from my collection on such a historical night for her, her family and this country."
Mrs. Obama made Panichigul a household name ahead of schedule: as the next featured designer for Target's International Go campaign, his Thakoon for Target collection will hit stores in early December. The former Harper's Bazaar editor has also created affordable lines for the Gap and Nine West. Impressive resume indeed.
Michelle Obama's style has been nothing short of stellar since her husband announced his candidancy. The dress worn last night by Thakoon, a VOGUE favorite, made it clear why she she recently made Vanity Fair magazine's 69th Annual Best Dressed List. In the article she was dubbed "Commander In Sheath" for sporting fashion forward dresses in classic lines that are not typical First Lady attire.

Michelle Obama and daughters, all in Maria Pinto
All week Lady O brought the heat dressed to the nines giving classic-with-a-twist ensembles. Oh and the hair. Please don't get me started on how she topped even Oprah with her uber perfect blowouts.
At the DNC's opening night on Monday, Mrs. Obama wore a teal v-neck knee-length dress with three-quarter sleeves (and her back out nevertheless, how sexy!) by her favorite designer Maria Pinto . She accessorized it with her own Erickson Beamon crystal pin and patent pumps. Wednesday she sported cobalt blue sheath with crystal-studded rosettes at the neckline. It was a fancy yet perfect pop of color for a camera angle shot from the waist up. I got a text message that night from a very stylish bff: OMG! Michelle O is NOT PLAYING in this dress she's wearing. The next day the fashion blogs had a field day over it as well. Last night she rightly secured her place in the high-fashion world, the red and black floral frock is likely to make society pages and cause conservatives to whisper for not sticking to traditional White House--friendly skirtsuits. Even the Obama daughters impressed us wearing perfectly coordinated dresses every night in this year's hot palette of bold, bright hues.

"Michelle's style can best be described as timeless," said designer Maria Pinto said in a statement e-mailed to the Associated Press on Tuesday. "Choosing items that are always modern and chic, Mrs. Obama possesses a natural and unpretentious sophistication, which is reflected in her clothing. But what I love most, is that at the foundation of this fabulous woman is an unbelievable brilliance and eloquence coupled by the grace and beauty of a dancer." The Chicago-based designer just opened a namesake boutique in Chicago's West Loop area. The teal dress she wore Monday will be available September 15th so you can get a piece of Lady O's style. After Mrs. Obama wore Pinto's purple sheath in June while giving her husband the infamous 'fistbump', demands for this design rose significantly: that dress alone is 6 months back-ordered. Call it the Obama Effect..
Maria Pinto is available at Saks, Barneys New York and Takashimaya. Or visit www.mariapinto.com for more information.
Now tell us, do you think Michelle Obama is too fashion forward for the White House?

Ithink Michell looks beautiful. She is not the carbon copy of the other first ladies and that is what makes her so special. Don't change a thing. "love ya" (smile)

Please don't get caught up in the white press BS; both King and Queen Obama must walk a precarious line in there public presentations. If she where’s designer fashions the white press will depict her as elitist. If she dresses down they will call her ghetto. Black, White, Brown or yellow Barak is the best thing to happen for this country since Bill Clinton. The majority of this country believes in freedom of choice for women and gun control, and we need to get them looking at those issues and not what damn dress Michelle was wearing. Let’s stay focused people; we can not afford to let the “good ol’ boys” distract us again.

Charles is talking like a man. Take it from a professional woman, how you dress matters. Michelle looked great and sexy. The problem was she looked a little too sexy for the occasion.
All these little nonsenses, counts to some people unfortunately, to vote for you. People want to envision how she would look reprenting th US infront of say, foreign diginitaries.
Did any one notice how the camera kinda captured her curvy booty when she was hugging Joe Biden? That's what you do not want. Major distraction. You want to be taken seriously? SUIT UP!
It doesn't even have to cost a fortune, but it helps to play the part. Politics is all games.

People, give it up! Get focused! Admit that neither Barack nor Michelle will change WHO they are, in order to make your vision of HOW they should be (even dressed). This is the same frustration the political pundits have, especially with Michelle. She scares them! They have NEVER encountered a WOMAN, let alone a Black woman, who makes no apologies for or compromises with her intelligence and sense of self.
Look how Barack had to WORK to get her! She was a force of nature before she met him or them. Her life
was one of style and class BEFORE and AFTER they became political. Her clothes reflect her choices of comfort and appropriateness. Give up on dress analysis and consider instead - Did you REALLY believe that SHE would let Hillary AND Bill get a foothold IN the White House and undermind Barack?
This is Harriet Tubman, Sojourner Truth, etc. reincarnated. She's a First Woman/Lady.

I agree with Jen...tailored suits would have been more appropriate. She looked gorgeous Monday night but that monstrosity she wore Thursday on the biggest night of her husband's political career was a disgrace! It was absolutely HORRIBLE!!!

Barbara, everything you said about Michelle is true & admirable, but once you want to get in the white house, all that is off. Nobody asked them to seek that position, so when they decided to, it comes with the territory. You either represent us the way we want to be represented or just stay home! Don't bother asking for our vote. This is a job, & she is on a job interview. You do whatever it takes to get the job & then you have the luxury of being yourself again. That's assuming you do not want a second term.
You have no idea how frivilously some of these white folks think! Not looking appropriate could cost them the white house.
Politics is a game, they should just play along. Play to win that is. After you win, then you bring out the hot comb! LOL!

Michelle has said repeatedly that she loves her style and won't change it. She loves her dresses and her suits from Maria Pinto. Love her for who she is.
