In what has definitely been a bad few weeks for celeb pooches, one of the two puppies recently adopted by Oprah Winfrey has died and the other is in critical condition.

In early March, Winfrey introduced 8-week-old Sadie to the world on her TV show. Sadie, a sweet blond cocker spaniel adopted from the Chicago PAWS shelter, is sibling to Ivan, who passed away last week from parvovirus -- a highly contagious infection that puppies are especially vulnerable to.
Style maven and Oprah BFF Gayle King revealed at a Valentino party last night that Sadie was also infected and is in the fore of everyone's thoughts.
"Sadie is in the hospital, but as you might expect, she is getting the best of care," King told US magazine. "I have fingers crossed, eyes closed. Prayers. We're all wishing Sadie will get better."
Says Dr. Jean Dobbs, a veterinarian who treated both puppies, "The puppy didn't make it, but he's teaching others how important this is to get vaccinated at the right times." Ivan apparently contracted the disease after receiving one parvo vaccination but before having a crucial booster shot.
In addition to Sadie, Winfrey is also mommy to two golden retrievers, Luke and Layla. In 2007, Winfrey tragically lost her beloved golden retriever Gracie, who choked on a plastic ball. Martha Stewart's chow chow puppy, Genghis Khan, was one of 17 dogs killed by a propane explosion at a boarding kennel in the Poconos last week.
The College Survival Guide
A Fridge
Regardless of whether you have a wonderful sized meal plan, your fridge may come in handy with leftovers or when you feel like stocking it with bottled drinks.
Computer
The convenience of a computer is essential when sending your kids off to college. Forget the hike to the computer lab across campus students need a computer in the comfort of their room. A printer comes in handy as well. Depending on whether your child plans to carry his laptop around campus, you might opt for a desk top since they're lighter on the pockets.
Snacks
You will surely survive with off of a meal plan but it doesn't hurt to stock up on snacks when you don't feel like leaving your dorm room. Bottled water, pop corn, cereal and Ramen noodles are all low budget snacks to stock up on. Just be weary of the freshman 15.
Things from home
Some college students suffer from homesickness the first year. It's best to surround yourself with things like photos of the family, pillows or even stuffed animals. Anything that reminds your child of home.
MP3 Player
With all the stress that comes from school and exams, sometimes it's nice to block out the chaos in your life and even your roommate with music. It's nearly impossible to find students walking to class who aren't jamming to tunes.
Budget
Students who enter college often come in at the ripening age of 18. A great time for credit cards. Parents beware, your child may end up ruining their credit at a young age
Alarm Clock
When you're in college you don't have the luxury of getting awaken by your parents. It's now your responsibility to get to class on time so alarm clocks are a must. But keep your roommate in mind. You shouldn't wake him up ever morning with a blow horn alarm.
Cleaning supplies
Now you don't necessarily need to bring in the rubber gloves, mop and gas mask but it doesn't hurt to bring along Clorox all purpose wipes for spills or dust. Vacuums and brooms come in handy too depending if you have a carpeted dorm.
Bedding
What most parents aren't aware of is that most college beds are twin sized but extra long and require special sheets. When shopping keep your eye open for sheets that clearly state 'extra long' or else your child may come up short.
Shower shoes
You really don't know what some people do in the shower these days. College showers are known to be creeping with germs so spare yourself the fungus and purchase flip flops for the shower. You'll thank us later!

I am so sorry for her loss. I've lost a rescue puppy to parvo also. We were playing one evening, the next morning he was listless, had the runs and was vomiting. I took his staight to the vet - 24 hours later he was dead. I just breaks your heart. It's a very painful disease for the dog- like having the worst case of the flu you've ever had X 10. Please- get all pets vacinated for Parvo! This disease hits your pets like a freight train and leaves very very few survivors.

I think dogs are wonderful, enjoy the company of all the neighborhood dogs, but all the prayers being prayed for Oprah's dog???? Makes me wonder if the innocent babies headed for slaughter are being prayed for??????

Sasha: That's what you're supposed to do "rescue" dogs from the pound you idiot..your comments are so asinine. And the fact that you're using the word B-itch in referring to women and dogs speaks volume about the person you are....an A-hole! Paying hundreds of dollars to breeders only promotes puppy mills..look into it....educate yourself!

Buying from a reputable breeder (not a puppy mill) doeyos NOT promote puppy mills; it promotes responsible breeding. I buy my dogs from people who carefully research the parents, run appropriate health checks and give appropriate care. And it works. My oldest dog is 13 and is vigorous and great health. Why animal rights groups think that it is a virtue to "adopt" an animal in questionable health from a shelter is beyond me. That just promotes back yard breeding.

Dogs are white European?? How about the dogs that help native African people hunt, namely the Basenji, and the Rhodesian Ridgeback. All people everywhere have discovered that dogs make a great addition to a family.
