It's Over: So What Were The Trends At NYC Fashion Week?

Comments (1)

New York Fashion Week is over. Now's the fun part: looking over hundreds of shows to figure out what trends we'll all be wearing in five months (once the clothes have been produced and delivered to stores). Usually, you can guess this without a single glance on the runway: like clock work, many designers rely on light fabrics, bright colors and floral prints. But this season a whole host of designers, from the always classy Tracy Reese to hip-hop chic Kimora Lee, packed some surprises for us. If they have their way -- and they will -- what will these designers have us wearing in Spring 2010?

* You'll Shine Brightly

A disco ball must have been many a designers source of inspiration this season. From the sparkly sequined leggings at the KLS by Kimora Lee Simmons Show to fluid metallic fabrics at Diane Von Furstenberg, it's all about letting your light shine - literally.

* You'll Be Showing Lots of Skin

From Donna Karan to Jill Stuart to Narciso Rodriguez, designers are championing a tasteful show of skin. Think sheer inlets, cut outs and strategically placed fabric. If ever something could sound trashy but look classy, this trend is it!

* Big Bird Will Be Your Inspiration

I'm all about taking bold fashion risks - but this one gives even me cause for pause: feathers and lots of them.

Jason Wu (Michelle Obama's fave) and Ralph Rucci are a handful of designers who opted to use big, beautiful, colored feathers as trim for skirts and jackets. I don't know that its for every day and for every woman, but high five to those who attempt to pull this off.

*You'll Dress Like It's 1999

It's not just television that's nostalgic for the 90s (has anyone caught the new 'Melrose Place?'), so are clothiers like Alexander Wang, Adam and Erin Wasson, who led the trend in clothes that look ripped from that decade with slouchy pants, baggy shirts and plaid prints.

* Dropped Crotches Won't Scare You

Seriously.

Ever envied those pants Aladdin wore in that Disney movie? Well, be jealous no more. Several labels including Chris Benz, Philip Lim and Vena Cava showed them this season. Dropped crotch pants, also called Harem pants, are actually in many stores now, but New York Fashion Week proved that this trend is definitely here to stay .

* You'll Be All Over the Color Spectrum

If the runways are any indication, you will love cool, neutral tones like slate grays and sandy tans, but you'll also lust after the polar opposite: uber-electric reds, yellows and greens. Two of my favorite designers, Rachel Roy and Tracy Reese showed both trends in each of their collections.

So there you have it, the top six trends from Spring 2010 shows. I already know the ones I'll be rocking (sparkly sequined leggings -- please don't judge). Which ones will you?
