Black Girls Rock! Stars Dazzle At 4th Annual Awards Benefit

If you were expecting fashion blunders at this weekend's 4th Annual Black Girl's Rock Awards, then you were wrong! The lavish event founded by DJ Beverly Bond paid homage to some of the most outstanding women of color, such as Mary J. Blige, Queen Latifah, and Naomi Campbell, among many others. And a majority of the honorees and guests at Black Girls Rock! came prepared to "rock" the red carpet in high-fashion, rip-the-runway style. BV on Style was there to scope out the red carpet looks and get the fall fashion scoop from the honorees and guests.

Mary J. Blige is always immaculate, so it came as no surprise when she stepped onto the red carpet looking absolutely flawless in a stunning black coat by Catherine Malandrino; along with a black sequined v-neck tunic and thigh-high boots. Her winning style and infectious presence, proved why Mary J. was indeed a worthy recipient of the Black Girls Rock! Icon award.

As for singer Janelle Monae, celebrity stylist and attendee, June Ambrose said, as she feverishly pointed towards the quirky star, "if I would say anyone's style is 'haute,' I'd say it would be hers!" I totally agree. Who else could pull off a black and white gender-bending tuxedo with such finess? Only Miss Monae. The unconventional singer-songwriter held her own, decked out in her very own signature creation she designed herself.

Janelle Monae's top three fashion must-haves that every woman should be rocking this year: "Happiness, peace, and ambition."
As one of the event hosts that evening, Tracee Ellis Ross looked enchanting, almost like a rare diamond, in an eye-catching silver sequined Max Mara bolero and form-fitted dark gray shift dress.

Regina King positively glowed. The award winning actress looked like a million dollar bill. As the second co-host of the event, she came prepared and ready for her close up. Donning a stunning red turtle-neck dress, adorned with a luxurious winter white coat by Erica Snow, Regina won my award as one of the night's best dressed. Her newly purchased black crocodile handbag by Luis, which she praised as "one of her favorites," added a touch of edge, and balanced off her luxurious black leather boots.

King shared one of the sexy fashion staples every woman should cop this fall: "Every woman should have an over-the-Knee boot, it's just necessary. Even women that have thicker legs, I would suggest that they find a boot that will accommodate that. And if they can't, make sure it has a seam, and you can open the seam and put elastic in it, and let your shoe man create the perfect over the knee boot. It's very sexy."

As soon as Naomi Campbell stepped onto the red carpet, the paparazzi swarmed around her like killer bees on honey! Why? 'Cause the woman is fierce! She looked stunning in a satin body-hugging dress, draped in a charming black mink stole. Clearly, this top model will forever be a trend setter!

Queen Latifah reigned supreme as she worked her magic in a shiny vinyl black coat, adorned with an interconnected pearl necklace and dark denim jeans. Although her look was not as extravagant as all of the rest, she looked just as regal, proving that she is the Queen when it comes to mixing casual and dressy pieces together in a way that works for her.

Raven-Symone personified the essence of classy-sexy, as she looked slim, trim, and fabulous in a black dress with scalloped slit-sleeves. Her tall black leather boots were a nice finishing touch to her chic ensemble.

The Emmys Red Carpet

Victoria Rowell: What was that, Victoria Rowell? You're a Barack Obama fan? We would never have guessed... Look, we're all for people expressing their political opinions, but use your words, people. NEVER your Emmy gowns. Let this be a lesson.

Chandra Wilson: This could be just a plain ol' trumpet dress (which was seen on many an actress last night), but the splattered floral design makes this flattering gown something special.

Heidi Klum & Seal: The very pregnant nominee and her very proud husband were chic in all-black. Red carpet choices for women in this stage of pregnancy are usually muumuu-inspired; props to Klum for going skintight and sexy.

Kim Kardashian: Wearing a white dress in a sea of dark colors is a sure way to stand out. We're pretty sure Kim K knew this when she chose this look, but we like the streamlined asymmetrical top and simple hoops.

LL Cool J: Here's the problem: every time LL insists on wearing his signature Kangol to formal events, we criticize him for not dressing for the occasion. But then, when he takes it off, all we want him to do is put it back on. Sorry, LL!

Padma Lakshmi: It doesn't take much for this model/foodie/Emmy nominee to look good, so of course she looks beautiful in this purple gown. However, we'd really like for that weird red thing on her hip to please pack its knives and go.

Shar Jackson: Why was Shar Jackson at the Emmys? More importantly, why is she wearing a prom dress that looks like it was sewn by Denise Huxtable circa 1984?

Vanessa Williams: Always a red carpet pro, the glamorous Emmy nominee didn't necessarily blow us away with this blue gown, but the dress and actress (and earrings!) made for a beautiful combination.
