Not only is she first lady, but
Michelle Obama is also America's favorite cover model. While her predecessor, Laura Bush, stuck to the traditional duties and causes of first ladies, Michelle Obama does that (she's particularly invested in promoting healthy living for kids) and finds time to appear on the covers some of the most heavily circulated fashion mags in the world. Mrs. O graces the December cover of Glamour's annual "Women of the Year" issue wearing a drop-waist red dress from her own closet. Inside, she posed for photos with some of her interns and
dished to Katie Couric about role models, the value of "cute" men and style standards.
On her role models: "They were the people in my life. My mom, for sure. My dad. The teachers. For me, role-modeling was immediate, it was touchable...Children connect with who is in their lives, present and accounted for...that's why we're trying to encourage moms, teachers, fathers to be that presence in their children's lives, in their communities, because it really makes a difference."
On personal style: "People are always going to have opinions, and people have a right to their opinions, particularly when you're the first lady; you're representing the nation. So I can't be surprised that people are interested. But I've tried to be at peace with the choices that I make first, and then be open to everyone else's reflection."
On cute guys: "Cute's good. But cute only lasts for so long, and then it's, who are you as a person? Don't look at the bankbook or the title. Look at the heart. Look at the soul. ...When you're dating a man, you should always feel good. ...You shouldn't be in a relationship with somebody who doesn't make you completely happy and make you feel whole."

A Fridge
Regardless of whether you have a wonderful sized meal plan, your fridge may come in handy with leftovers or when you feel like stocking it with bottled drinks.
Computer
The convenience of a computer is essential when sending your kids off to college. Forget the hike to the computer lab across campus students need a computer in the comfort of their room. A printer comes in handy as well. Depending on whether your child plans to carry his laptop around campus, you might opt for a desk top since they're lighter on the pockets.
Snacks
You will surely survive with off of a meal plan but it doesn't hurt to stock up on snacks when you don't feel like leaving your dorm room. Bottled water, pop corn, cereal and Ramen noodles are all low budget snacks to stock up on. Just be weary of the freshman 15.
Things from home
Some college students suffer from homesickness the first year. It's best to surround yourself with things like photos of the family, pillows or even stuffed animals. Anything that reminds your child of home.
MP3 Player
With all the stress that comes from school and exams, sometimes it's nice to block out the chaos in your life and even your roommate with music. It's nearly impossible to find students walking to class who aren't jamming to tunes.
Budget
Students who enter college often come in at the ripening age of 18. A great time for credit cards. Parents beware, your child may end up ruining their credit at a young age
Alarm Clock
When you're in college you don't have the luxury of getting awaken by your parents. It's now your responsibility to get to class on time so alarm clocks are a must. But keep your roommate in mind. You shouldn't wake him up ever morning with a blow horn alarm.
Cleaning supplies
Now you don't necessarily need to bring in the rubber gloves, mop and gas mask but it doesn't hurt to bring along Clorox all purpose wipes for spills or dust. Vacuums and brooms come in handy too depending if you have a carpeted dorm.
Bedding
What most parents aren't aware of is that most college beds are twin sized but extra long and require special sheets. When shopping keep your eye open for sheets that clearly state 'extra long' or else your child may come up short.
Shower shoes
You really don't know what some people do in the shower these days. College showers are known to be creeping with germs so spare yourself the fungus and purchase flip flops for the shower. You'll thank us later!

To Yvette: I hate what the Obama's are doing to this country but I'm NOT LEAVING, and don't have to. Neither do any of the millions of other Americans who are so tired of his rhetoric and his sneaky and arrogant ways.
I cannot believe that even you approve of the latest shenanigan he pulled yesterday, once again to the detriment of our country, big-time!! He reversed the rule that AIDS/HIV infected people cannot enter our country to be taken care of by US!! Yes, it's true. I cannot believe it myself, when he's trying supposedly so hard to insure that Americans have health care. Why would he do that?? Where is the outrage and the coverage of this outrageous behavior of his once again?? It also mentioned in the news story, that our country takes total care of these ILLEGALS who hs is beckoning here, we pay all medical and living costs for these sick foreigners!!! I know....I didn't believe it either. Where is his common sense? and for this type of thing, WE are supposed to leave the country if we don't like it??? I don't THINK so!!!

I only wish you people had this type of out cry when bush, had wiretapping, the patroit act, and a war on lies while he spent billions in blank checks. That to me was communism, he had no checks and balances and spent this country into the ground and you people said nothing. Now when someone have to spend to turn this mess around and it is turning, you use statements like he is breaking this country. How can he break what is already broken? If health care isn't reformed it will be broken. How do you know these countries where these people are coming from are not paying big monies for them, because they don't have the resources for it? It is all about the green.

Don't you people get it....that the reason the comments are so caustic against M.O. is because people are pushing back on the constant positive statments made in the media about how glamorous she is, how she is a fashionista, the best first lady ever, and just on and on? So many of us are sick to pieces seeing how the Obama's seem to be taking on movie star roles, instead of tending to the huge, pressing needs of the US. Naturally when AOL and other media outlets profess how wonderful and beautiful she is like it is a definite fact, people who disagree are going to react. This "rudeness" as you call it can't even begin to compare to what the left did to Sarah Palin and her family, and still are, as a matter of fact, and she's not even in office...a place where stupid decisions are made every day, so naturally there's going to be lots of feedback. We are SCARED of Obama and his strange and radical ways, trying to circumvent the constitution and reverse many laws which are beneficial to us. It is not strange or mean at all to criticize him because we don't like him and are tired of him getting shoved down our throats.

HEY AMERICA!!!!!! I have a beautiful First Lady at home. She dresses down to distract from unwanted attention. We have been married for 34 uninterrupted years. Our two adult daughters are just as beautiful, true model material and confident in their beauty. My three granddaughters can model for Saks, Macy's or Bloomingdale's any day!
The most beautiful thing about the visually attractive women in my life are their Spirits and divine energy.
As a black man, it hurts me to say, Mrs. Obama has an immoral Spirit. She remained silent as her husband engaged in "infanticide" - the killing of botched abortion babies in Illinois. Accordingly, no amount of make-up, expensive hair stylist, bright lights or digital manipulation in the world will ever make Michelle Obama a beautiful women - PERIOD!!!!!!
Killing babies - GOD HELP US!!!!!!

Being on the cover of a magazine does not require that you be a model, in particular, the Glamour "Women of the Year" cover is usually given to a woman of considerable talent and influence who is being honored for her accomplishments - rarely models! It is sad that there would be such disparaging remarks about her physical when the world of fashion and media needs to showcase more diversity - a perfect face and body aren't the mark of beauty. Michelle Obama is a remarkable, intelligent, sophisticated woman, who if nothing else, is making the WORLD take notice of American women again!
