Paris Vogue painted model Lara Stone a deep bronze for their October issue:

Tyra Banks then followed suit, shooting her newbie contestants as various races for an 'America's Next Top Model' Shoot :

It seems that the fashion elites are collectively resorting to face paint for their avant garde editorials.
While Paris Vogue came under fire for their photos, Tyra Banks and V Magazine haven't been criticized. It also begs the question: If African-American mogul Tyra Banks is painting people other races for purposes of artistic expression, is the practice truly racially insensitive?
What do you think of this new fashion trend? Are people simply being too sensitive...and missing the inherent beauty in skin painting? Or are the people doing the skin painting remiss in ignoring the historical implications of blackface?

White models posing in black face for artistic expression? In the 21st century? It's all very confusing to me when there are models that already have natural (and beautiful) black skin of all shades, just trying to get modeling jobs.

The impact of the paint combined with the beauty of the models is dramatic and beautiful. I, for one, am happy to see the color black portrayed in a positive, beautiful way. It's about time for many more people to recognize the beauty in black, brown, "dark skin".
Historical black face was accompanied by buffoonary and negative sterotypical behavior in many of the instances of use in the past. The meaning and insult was negative and a lot deeper than it's use in the above examples.

If I make a really funny joke about Jewish people am I a talented comedian or a racist, anti-semist?
If I'm Jewish and make that joke am I a self-hating Jew? Does my making that joke make it ok for everyone else to make anti-semitic jokes?
I really don't think that we as a society have come so far, black president or not, for blackface to be okay and acceptable.
