Fall Forward Fashions: Fall/Winter 2010 New York Fashion Week Runway Report

Are you ready to rip the runway with BV at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week New York? If the answer is yes, buckle up your stiletto booties, because it's going to be a stylish ride! We jetted to the famed tents of Bryant Park, where designers will show for the last time this season before heading Uptown in September to MBFW NY's new home at Lincoln Center.

Although, temperatures are low, excitement was high backstage at Mackage, our first show of the day. We caught-up with Alicia Keys' mane woman Tippi Shorter, who was getting the models' tresses in order.

"The inspiration for the models hair is this bed-head sort of walk-of-shame kind of do," said Shorter, who flew in for Fashion Week from Brazil, where she was taping a music video with Keys. "Our girl is sophisticated, she's sexy and she's chic, but because it is her walk of shame, the hair is a little messed up -- it was some static, a little oil and greasy. Definitely not perfect."

Shorter and the AVON team went for a diagonal deep side part and, using AVON'S Advanced Techniques Volumizing Mousse ($4, avon.com) on dry hair created a low side ponytail on the same side of the bang. Two ponytails were created to look like one and stylists used their fingers instead of combs to give that gritty bed-head effect, which was finished off with Avon's Advanced Techniques Mirror Shine Spray ($5, avon.com).On the runway, Canadian design duo Elisa Dahan and Eran Elfassy sent down the 43 looks. Known for their wool jackets and down coats, their Fall/Winter 2010 collection was classic Mackage -- studs, zippers, shearling fur collars and one-of-kind leather detailing.

What we were surprised to see was a departure from being solely outerwear focused. From the red and grey Prince of Wales check dresses to the black leather mini skirt, Mackage demonstrated their design versatility with a strong ready-to-wear offering. The Mackage woman can now not only get her fix on impeccable tailored outerwear, she can accent it with sexy structured separates.
"The ready-to-wear was different than usual," Elfassy told us after the show. "We like structure, but sexy. We don't like to be too revealing but then we'll show an open back or throw in a short dress."

After Mackage we darted out of the tents, but not before crossing paths with Vogue's Anna Wintour, who had just left an early preview of Vena Cava's Fall/Winter collection the exact show we were headed to at Milk Studios in the Meat Packing District.
Backstage at Vena Cava we chatted with TLC's "What Not To Wear" lead hairstylist Ted Gibson, whose team from the Ted Gibson Salon New York was working on an equestrian inspired ponytail for the show.

"It's not your average equestrian look we added a bold streak of color to the hair to give it some edge," Gibson said. "This is not your Ralph Lauren equestrian because this girl is downtown chic."
