Is Andre Leon Talley making career moves sans Vogue these days? That's been the question in the fashion blogosphere over the past few weeks after the longtime Vogue editor began judging Cycle 14 of 'America's Next Top Model.' News of his name being shifted on the magazine's masthead from his near-the-top position of editor-at-large to one of several contributing editors jammed together at the bottom of the page ignited even more talk of a possible departure. The communications team at Vogue who denied a move.
"There's actually no change in his position," Patrick O'Connell, a representative from the magazine, told BV. "He'll still have his column and be just as involved with the magazine."
O'Connell also noted that the title change resulted from Talley's desire to do more freelance work outside of the magazine, like his role on ANTM. That's great news considering what a champion of diverse designers he's been over the years, helping to bring women like Rachel Roy and Tracey Reese into the international spotlight.
And speaking of 'Top Model,' Talley's proving to be the comedic relief among the panel of judges, which includes "noted fashion photographer" Nigel Barker, Tyra Banks and a different guest judge each episode. On last night's episode, he even coined a new fashion term: Dreckitude! He explained it, saying one model hopeful's holey black leggings were, "dreck, which means a wreck." Yeah, that didn't make sense to us either. Check out this clip of Talley judging a recent episode:
Thank goodness ALT is keeping his day job at Vogue and spreading his kimono-covered wings to explore projects like 'ANTM' -- his signature commentary, peppered with French words and the occasional "honey child," is always both inspired and off-the-wall. Like when he told one model contestant her nude portrait offered a "telescopic view into the nether regions...and you've done it with style." Now that's fierce!
Catch Andre and the crew Wednesdays at 8 EST on the CW or watch full episodes of the show at CW.com and read his 'Life with Andre' blog on Vogue.com.
