The Nicki Minaj Effect

Comments (25)

Like it or not, the self-proclaimed 'Harajuku Barbie' Nicki Minaj has had quite an effect on the style of a slew of young, fashionable followers:

Though she has yet to release a full album, the female MC has single handedly sparked a 'Barbie' movement, thanks to her outrageous wardrobe and signature bubble gum style. Tweens are now racing to purchase candy pink lipgloss, various banged wigs, and nameplate necklaces in an effort to mimic her charm. The Nicki Minaj effect is so far reaching, it even inspired a facebook group with over 3,000 fans called, "You are not Nicki Minaj, please stop!". A sampling of over 50 pictures shows girls with Nicki Minaj's style down to a T.

The most outspoken Nicki Minaj fans have taken to Youtube to show off their style and skills. In the video below (which has attracted over 37,000 viewers), a young lady who calls herself 'Sammygirlification" preens in front of the camera with pale pink gloss, a revealing top, and long hair weave. Before launching into a rap, however, she maintains that to be a fly girl, one must have lipgloss, hot shoes, and be 'white and bourgeois': The video highlights a disturbing twist in the Nicki Minaj trend: do girls simply want to preen to be 'cute' and bubbly? Or is the Nicki Minaj effect encouraging girls to aspire to a somewhat fake, artificial ideal?
