Mommy Mavens: Fashion's Most Inspiring Mothers

Comments (5)

If some of the most successful women of color in fashion are any indication, mothering adorable little girls is the real key to success within the industry. Some of our favorite celebrity moms--model and philanthropist Liya Kebede, model and beauty executive Iman, and fashion mogul Kimora Lee Simmons and designer Rachel Roy--are as equally committed to raising their little ones as they are to holding the reigns of the fashion world.

Liya Kebede
: The 32-year-old mother of two has dominated the fashion world since 2000 as one of only a handful of brown faces working with top lines like Gucci, Louis Vuitton and Dolce and Gabbana. Even though she's garnered multiple American Vogue covers and maintained a lucrative partnership with Estee Lauder, Kebede remains focused on her 8-year-old son Sohul and 4-year-old daughter Raee, whom also inspire her philanthropic work. "The minute you have children, you realize you want to leave a better world for your kids," said Kebede, who founded the Liya Kebede Foundation to support mothers and their children's health, worldwide. She is also a Goodwill Ambassador for Maternal Newborn and Child Health for the World Health Organization, where she focuses efforts on her home country of Ethiopia as well as Europe and Asia.

Iman
: Born in Somalia and discovered at the age of 20, Iman's career and personal life has read like a fairy tale. In between covetous modeling gigs with fashion magazines and designers like Versace and Calvin Klein, Iman met and married basketball star Spencer Haywood. The two welcomed their only child, Zulekha, in 1978 before divorcing in the late '80s. The CEO of Iman Cosmetics then established an unlikely relationship with British pop star David Bowie, with whom she had another daughter, 9-year-old Alexandria or "Lexi." The 54-year-old mom of two was the subject of a recent essay, composed by Zulekha, that ran in Glamour magazine. Detailing her struggles with obesity and living in the shadow of world-famous parents, Iman's daughter wrote of forgiving her mother: "She had tried her best, I realized. As a child, I had been so angry with her. Now my compassion for her nearly brought me to tears."

Kimora Lee Simmons
: This lively, gregarious CEO of Phat Fashions may be a former muse to Chanel's Karl Lagerfeld and ex-wife of mogul Russell Simmons, but she also clearly loves being a mommy. Her two little girls, Ming Lee, 10, and Aoki Lee, 7, have been a part of her fashion empire practically since birth, appearing in ad campaigns for Baby Phat Girlz and helping their mom end all of Baby Phat New York Fashion Week shows with a strut down the runway. While running her company, filming the hit reality show "Life in the Fab Lane" and penning self-help books, Kimora met and married Beninese actor Djimon Hounsou. The two welcomed their son, Kenzo Lee, in 2009. "My kids and my business make my world go 'round - they're what I live for," Kimora told 'Working Mother' magazine last year.

Rachel Roy
: Beautiful, smart and wildly successful, Roy is the epitome of a real-life superwoman. She runs her eponymous fashion lines, Rachel Roy New York and Rachel Rachel Roy, the first of which is a favorite of celebs like Oprah and Joy Bryant. The latter is an affordable collaboration with Macy's that she has said was inspired by her belief that fashion should be accessible. After divorcing Rocafella Records co-founder Damon Dash last year, she parents their two daughters, Ava, 10, and Tallelah, who'll be 2 on May 13, solo. Earlier this year, she announced a partnership with Fairwinds, which supports the creative and business efforts of African women by distributing their handmade jewelry through the Rachel line. She was inspired by her girls to introduce the collaboration, saying, "My goal as a working woman and mother is to support women's independence through employment."
