How to Rock Trendy Prints

Comments (2)

Stripes, polka dots and tribal, oh my. Prints are a big trend right now but can also be a bit tricky. They're a great deviation from the safe, monochromatic look, but, if not done properly, your outfit can easily go from hot to not. Whether you want to try a splashy abstract print or mix patterns, the key is to keep it nice and simple. Below are tips for a few prints you may want to try but might not be sure how to wear.

Stripes
Stripes add a great nautical feel to your spring or summer wardrobe but depending on how they're worn, can you ultra unflattering. Most people think horizontal stripes are to generally be avoided, but Kelly Rowland pulls off the look in style. The thin stripes keep her body from looking wide. Also, vertical stripes on a jacket can actually give the illusion of an elongated figure.

Polka Dots
Polka dots may conjure up images of childhood or Minnie Mouse but they can certainly be worn in a mature way. Alek Wek's sheath dress is a perfect example. She hits the sartorial mark with a ladylike silhouette paired with dainty accessories. It's also best to avoid large dots and overly bright colors to keep the look more chic, than cutesy.

Abstract and Tribal prints
Abstract and tribal prints have to be the biggest rage for spring. However, such a bold, bright look can be overwhelmed with too many accessories. Neutral accents, like Kerry Washington's gold clutch and pumps, assure the print is the main focus.

Mixing Patterns
Florals with stripes? The combo may sound wacky but for the daring lady who wants to mix and match her prints, it can work. Patterns can commingle but colors should be in the same family to keep a cohesive look. Other than that, have fun and experiment.
