The modeling industry isn't exactly known for being diverse. So we can't help but get excited when a woman of color succeeds despite fashion's predilection for models with western European looks.
Take Joan Smalls, for instance. The Puerto Rican-born stunner ends a year that included ads for Givenchy, Gucci, Gap and becoming the new face of Estee Lauder. The global advertising campaign will debut in May. This year Smalls also snagged editorials in i-D, Interview, V, Vogue US, Vogue Germany, Vogue Italia and Vogue Paris
The budding model was also named one of the 15 most buzzed about models of 2010 by Fashionista.com. It was definitely a great year for Smalls and we look forward to seeing the promising star rise in 2011.

Congrats.to Ms Joan Small.The fashion & modeling world R
so very fickle.Lately black models struggle for work and
the silliness of race/skin color is still being played. The
magazines R using celeberties on their covers & that does
not help the situation any.I have noticed that even black
celebs.are not getting very many covers. So the unrealness
of the businesses remains as unfair & racist as ever.Oh
baby how long ? !!!!!!!!
