If you've never thrifted, it can be intimidating. Piles of unorganized clothes and pushy crowds are enough to scare anyone off. Luckily, Black Voices has you covered with 5 thrift store shopping tips to help you scour like a pro. You'll add some great pieces to your wardrobe without breaking the bank.
STEP 1: Dress the Part
Your choice of clothes while you're shopping for new clothes can make all the difference. Opt for close-fitting attire (leggings and a cardigan) so you can try things on over your clothes. Comfy flats are also a must, but stay away from open toes, as you're bound to get accidentally stepped on at a major thrift sale. Also, leave the large purse at home. A crossbody bag frees your hands up and won't get in your way.
STEP 2: Work in Teams
Shopping with girlfriends won't just give you a buddy to have lunch with afterwards - you can also help one another shop. If you're looking for something specific, let her know. She can keep an eye out if she comes across anything that you may be interested in. Once you're done shopping, you can swap items. And if there's no mirror at your secondhand location, she can give you an honest opinion on how something looks.

If a piece of clothing catches your eye, grab it. In the fast-paced thrifting world, there's no time to initially deliberate about a look. Other shoppers will already be moving on to the next rack of goodies while you're still stuck on one piece.
Once you've finished shopping (but before you head to the register), find a corner and make a final decision about what to keep, swap with a fellow shopper or put back on the racks. Many shops have a no-return policy, so check (and double check) for rips, tears or stains.
STEP 4: Online Options
If the thought of a crowded, unorganized thrift shop is too overwhelming, there are a few online options. Goodwill (http://www.shopgoodwill.com/) lets you browse everything from art to accessories to clothing from the comfort of your laptop. The convenience factor isn't the only draw - sometimes the online selection is even better than what's in stores!
STEP 5: Sign Up and Stay Tuned
In this technological age, nearly every brand or store is online. Use this to your advantage by signing up for their newsletters, following them on Twitter or liking their Facebook pages. You'll usually find out about last minute sales and stay up to date on any new store openings.

I only shop during the yearly sales. I bought a $99 Jones of New York dress for $20. Thrift stores tend only to carry smaller sizes. Nicer 'thrift shops' are anything but 'Thrifty'.

Nothin wrong in shoppin THRIFTY Occasionally or all the time and savin some $$$$$? My favorite place is the GoodWill Store. The GoodWill near wear I live is by rich neighborhoods. GoodWill has a lot of name brand designer clothes, merchandise, and accessories, vintage clothing and antique Jewelry,& household items. Most of the time, the merchandise is in tack, good condition, hardly used, never used, gently worn or not worn at all with tag still on.
I bought in the past antique earrings, bracelets, and other accessories that was worth a lot of $$$$$. I found a $90 or more Leather Chair for my Computer Desk for only $20? I love savin $$$$$ & I love buying for myself & for others. It is nice to have someone to go shoppin with you. That person will always look out for what you are lookin for and tell you the truth how somethin looks on you. The Consignment stores are nice too. I bought a bag of designer clothing 10 Items for $10 I saved a lot of $$$$.
A good time to go to get good sales are at the end of each season where the store has a lot of markdowns and clearances. The only thing at the GoodWill Stores, you can only get store credit or you can do an exchange with no money back. The Consignment Stores where I go, the sales are Final and no Returns? I love to help by Donating my merchandise and clothes to the GoodWill and Consignment Stores. It makes me feel good knowing that somebody might be in need? GoodLuck Shoppin! :-) .

Goodwill used to be good for bargains .. now they are just greedy ... their prices are way too high with many used or beat up items priced at more than you can buy the item for if it were new. On top of that most of them just schlep the clothes on a rack without any sizing order ... Who wants to sift through a 100 items that aren't their size?

@ Todd Loren Sinclair,
The only thing I have a problem with GoodWill, they never have my size in shoes? There are times when I can't find jeans or pants in my size either?I say if you have the time & patience, it's great sifting through you never know what you might find? But, I understand what you are sayin? And as far as beat up items you find, maybe try another GoodWill Store? Not all of the Stores merchandise is like that? I remember when GoodWill use to refund your $$$$$ back, they stopped that. Credit or Exchange only. Good Luck :-)

Girlfriend I'm with you! "Today I brought $150.00 Loft Dress for $1.00, tags still on. "I learned to accept a blessing a long time ago!" "As a matter of fact I am in the Fashion Show for my favorite thrift store every year." "Another thing is, most of these places support ministries!

@Doing the thing! SAT WHAT? Gurl God showed and told you that the dress was WAITIN THERE JUST FOR YOU! You GO GURL! "You DO THE DARN THING DOWN THAT WALK WAY"! :-)
Hey, I'm not a shame and like you said, most of these places support ministries. Being that we are living in a Recession, Stores like these give lots of good job opportunities and placement, gives back to the community, better our communities, and does a whole lot of other things for a worthy cause! Its rewarding giving back by donating too!
WE SHOULD ALL SUPPORT!
