From The New York Daily News:
It's time to meet the finalists.
Six young, African-American designers have applied for the chance that could launch a career. Thanks to Harlem's Fashion Row, three of them will present runway shows uptown on Sept. 16, during the next New York Fashion Week.
And it's up to New Yorkers to decide who makes the cut.
"We looked for people who have a very clear vision," says Brandice Henderson, founder and CEO of Harlem's Fashion Row. "I wanted someone who had a picture in their head of the person they are dressing."
From 15 semifinalists, Henderson and her team culled the top six, evaluating portfolios and interviewing designers in person. In the end, three will make it to the runway, backed by a marketing push and a network of fashion industry know-how - all for free.
"A lot of young designers aren't able to fund a presentation which would introduce them to buyers and editors," says Henderson, "so Harlem's Fashion Row has become about giving them a platform they might not have otherwise."
Henderson established the organization in 2007, thinking it would be a one-time event. As she talked to designers, she realized how many resources were needed to get a collection off the ground.
"It became a challenge, even, to find designers of color," she says. "We'd have to go through a friend of a friend of a friend."
Today Harlem's Fashion Row is one part networking group, one part fashion incubator, and offers seminars and conversation series. For the six designers currently dreaming up collections, however, it is the chance for a big city debut. Who will be on the runway in Harlem this year?

Okay, I thought I had seen black women contort their wooly kinky hair every way possible, but those photos show a new extreme in ugliness.
On the practical side, wouldn't you tend to have your hair run into doorway ceilings that way?!

What the hell is that the audition for Horton Hears a Ho? How the Grinch Pimped Some B&*#!es? I was expecting something a little more avant garde or Afro-garde(?) if you will. Not saying I want to see a resurgence of Kente cloth; but ANY White designer could have made that. When we get the chance to shine we should use our own light.

Hmmm, as a fashion designer I'm thinking it's great they have the opportunity to show @ fashion wee. That's every aspiring designer's dream! But we clearly have a difference of opinion in matters of creativity and taste. But hey, THEY are the ones going to fashion week! Much respect to them for that! Good Luck!

Plz tell me that this iznt all that can be offered in terms of 'fashion' by the young, gifted and BLACK designers. I have a Bachelor of Science degree in Fashion Merchandising from a private, Catholic University and this dispaly of garbage resembles a circus sideshow. HORRIFIC!!

That one 2nd from the right looks like she is bending over to throw up. Maybe she saw a picture of herself in the mirror.

Anyone who understands how fashion shows work should not have so many negative things to say about the girls in the pic. I'm sure everyone realizes that this is clearly not a street look. The outrageous makeup and extreme hair brings more attention to the garments. How would anyone remember what they've seen otherwise? If any of you put a show together I'm wondering how YOUR models might look? Hmmm....

Everybody has a right to their own opinion. Just because you like doesn't mean that others have to. Everybody has different taste and what people make comment isn't HATE. If I were to put on a show, it would be FABULOUS, my models would be right on point, and I would be poising right along with them, strutting down the runway, with my beautiful bad self! I would get the job done. Do YOU have what it takes to do a show. Sound like you are friend or a family member trying to make them look good on the blogs? You are in DENIAL!

really my response is to "The Fabulous PRINCESS" It is clear that you know nothing about the fashion industry. If you've ever seen a REAL fashion show, you'd know that hair and make-up are done in a non-flattering way so that people won't say "oh what an attractive model" but "oh what an outfit"....there is no need for you to try to rag on the original poster...they didn't try to defend the designers or models, they simply gave you the actual reason for their make up and hair....get over yourself.
