Reminds me of the scene in Waiting to Exhale when they stepped out of church in those bangin floppy hats! When is my movie coming out Terry McMillan? Is Face or Ne Yo going to jam the soundtrack to Exhale2 (I know I know Getting to Happy haha)?

I have two from the last couple of seasons and may invest in more but--I think Black as the choice of hat for summer would only make it to funerals. My first was for summer, helps keep the glare out of your eyes even with shades; only problem until you get used to how much coverage, you practically need a guide-dog to get where you are going without any mishaps. I recall that my mother had very few of these (done by a milliner)after the Forties because that is where these large hats really hark back to although floppy-rimmed were Flower Child for sure.
Also, I can tell you up front: these are not for short ladies. The more stature you have going for you, the better. I am shrinking in height, having attained all of five/four in my adult life and--
I am past high heels to make up for it.
My first investment was from Hat Attack/New York but made in China ( the Chinese make fabulous hats in this category for two reasons, climate and culture. Southern or Nan China is sun-hot; plus they took up a more Northern fetish, from where women were lighter complexioned due to climate. Hats and veils were used by "Medieval" and class-oriented civilization to hide women and allowed a woman to increase her mystery in both China and Japan. Which made her more desirable).
Secondly the later Trade period following the Renaissance in the Western World, which made colonial advances into Asia,
particularly when the British arrived in Shanghai to trade opium for silver -- taught the Chinese something didn't it? Which they have adopted to the current contemporary world. They realized by the 11th.century,that paper money was valueless; printing more of it does not match hard cash of precious ore. And eventually, the Western woman, British, showed up. In hats. You may have noticed, with the recent wedding in London of Diana's first son, that the Brits are gaga about their hats.
So, my first summer hat was an incredibly white White floppy with an attached band between the crown and the softly falling deep width that was machine-sewn into twelve parallel circuits of the crown. Both the band, which is folded into a loose knot loosely tacked to the crown, and the rim of the floppy brim are a bright blue-navy. Making this the perfect hat for walking along the beach (or, anywhere else). Picture yourself as Diane Keaton in, Reds, opposite Warren Beatty at the Provincetown Playhouse, when Jack Nicholson/Eugene O'Neill comes into her life. Women wore a lot of coverage at the beach in the fashions of that period but of fabric that was extremely filmy.
For the opposite kind of weather, I have exactly the same style of hat, without the band, which is less beige than "Cafe" in a blend of wool, alpaca, and angora from Helen Kaminski. She is at www.helenkaminski.com
The more summery hats are from SimplySoles
www.simplysoles.com
in Washington,D.C.
They can send you a catalog of summer choices. Worn on the beaches at Antibes between the Twenties and WW2. A story told of Ernest Hemingway in, The Paris Wife. (the latest best-seller)

There is a lady in today's B more Sun on with a nice floopy hat she got from Target to wear to U2 in B more (FB stadium). Funny I was looking for a last minute hat to wear to my daughter's college grad (in FB stadium in another state) but didn't want a Target hat everyone had but they were nice. I agree with the British (I lived in England) special occasions call for a special hat!!! Next time I will start early looking for a nice unique hat.
