Gabourey Sidibe: rising star, Oscar nominee, magazine cover girl and... airbrush victim?

One of four cover models for Elle's 25th anniversary October issue, Sidibe appears on the front of the fashion magazine with what appears to be lighter skin. Critics say that the 'Big C' actress not only seems to have been digitally lightened, but that the plus-size star was not depicted in the same type of full-body photo as the other three cover models and that her hair style is unflattering.

In a statement, Elle said, "Nothing out of the ordinary was done. We have four separate covers this month and Gabby's cover was not retouched any more or less than the others... If you take a look at the portfolio, each of the women were shot in different ways and for different reasons."

The Williams sisters are known for being powerhouses in tennis, but they've also become known for some making some controversial fashion decisions on the court. So it shouldn't come as a surprise that the oldest of the athletic superstars, Venus, wore a back-baring sequin outfit during her U.S. Open match against Shahar Peer Sunday. Williams said she wore the design in honor of the Big Apple.

"This outfit was supposed to be about New York," she told the New York Daily News. "It's like bursts of fireworks."

Williams last caused a stir with her athletic gear in May, when she wore a racy lace dress during the French Open. Click through our gallery for more of the Williams sisters interesting tennis looks.

Proof that you can wear white after Labor Day, from left: fall 2010 runway styles from Chanel, Valentino and Anna Sui. Photos: Pascal Le Segretain/Getty Images, Eric Ryan/Getty Images, Frazer Harrison/Getty Images for IMG

Wearing white after Labor Day these days is as acceptable as wearing black to a wedding or skipping pantyhose at the office. It's an old school fashion rule, that's not only been broken, but practically rewritten.

"Not only can you wear white after Labor Day, you should wear white all year long, especially if you live in a seasonless climate," Charla Krupp, fashion expert and author of "How to Never Look Fat Again," tells StyleList. "White can be stunning in a dress, jacket, sweater or coat."

Heather Kenny, a Chicago-based style expert, wardrobe adviser, and personal shopper agrees, but does have a few white-wearing caveats.

"Put away the linen dresses and tissue-thin cotton tops in favor of crisp white shirts and white dresses made of heavier-gauge materials," she tells StyleList. "White needs a little bit more substance in fall. Those wispy white separates will just look wrong in the golden autumn light and the back-to-school mentality. You could still wear a light top under a jacket or cardigan though."

Stylelist asked their experts for some fall and winter white advice. Click here to read what they had to say.

At this point, we know the deal when it comes to mainstream magazines' ubiquitous "Hollywood up-and-comers" issues: it's unlikely there will be very much diversity on the magazine's cover. Remember the controversy over Vanity Fair's "Young Hollywood" issue, which featured no actresses of color?

W magazine has done a better job with it's cover for its September "New It Girls" issue. Former 'America's Next Top Model' contestant and 'The Kids are All Right' actress YaYa DaCosta and Hollywood royalty Zoë Kravitz are both featured.

Halle Berry's hitting the silver screen again, this time in a comedic -- and stylish -- role. She's set to star in the film 'Shoe Addicts Anonymous,' about four different women with nothing in common but their love for shoes and their 7.5 shoe size.

"Halle related to [the part]," Mark Bozek, the film's producer, told WWD. "She gets all these serious parts and said, 'Nobody thinks of me as a comedic actress' but she's really funny. She also loves shoes."

How deep does her love go? We checked out some recent photos of the star to see if life really does imitate art. We'll say this much -- Berry doesn't wear the same pair twice! Click through our photo gallery to see some of the Oscar winner's recent footwear fashion.

Janet Jackson is beloved by many -- but not PETA! It was recently announced that the superstar would be the new face of fur company BlackGlama, and an executive at the animal rights organization has already made its displeasure clear in a letter.

"You told me that you were always aggravated at photo shoots when stylists would try to throw fur on you and that you were even wary of wearing fake fur out of concern that it might actually be real or look real in photos and send the wrong message," Dan Matthews, PETA Senior Vice President wrote in the letter, which was obtained by Black Voices. "You were very straightforward and sensible about it. What happened?"

Matthews went so far as to reference the death of her brother, Michael Jackson: "I've admired your grace 'Good Times' to your family's recent hard times. I sincerely hope that the events of recent years haven't hardened your heart to the suffering of others."

Jada Pinkett Smith went for a micro-mini look (while her kids with Will Smith, Jaden and Willow, looked like tiny rock stars). Nicki Minaj had bright orange hair and wore what could have passed for a wedding dress. Host Queen Latifah rocked classic looks from her past. And the man of the hour, Prince, chose to wear a jacket emblazoned with his likeness.

Yes, it was the 2010 BET Awards, and the fashion was as fierce and as far out as the show itself. Black Voices was on the red carpet and at the awards, where we chatted with stars such as Pharrell Williams (who rattled off names of the designers he was wearing better than any female celeb), Omarosa, Larenz Tate, Trina and more, about their style and, of course, Lifetime Achievement Award recipient, Prince.

Watch our exclusive red carpet footage, and click through our gallery for more fashion from the red carpet and the show.
