Doesn't really matter if you are reading this from the frigid East Coast or the balmy West Coast, temperatures are falling. But that doesn't mean your style has to! For the winter season, some of my favorite retailers (Forever 21, anyone?) have launched amazing, festive items that keep you warm and weather appropriate. I won't lie, it was tough finding 10 under $20. But thanks to the hard work, with a $100 or less, you can flaunt priceless style as the temperature dips.

Paris Vogue painted model Lara Stone a deep bronze for their October issue:

Tyra Banks then followed suit, shooting her newbie contestants as various races for an 'America's Next Top Model' Shoot :

And finally, V Magazine topped them all with Sasha Pivovarova in blackface in their November Issue:

It seems that the fashion elites are collectively resorting to face paint for their avant garde editorials.

While Paris Vogue came under fire for their photos, Tyra Banks and V Magazine haven't been criticized. It also begs the question: If African-American mogul Tyra Banks is painting people other races for purposes of artistic expression, is the practice truly racially insensitive?

What do you think of this new fashion trend? Are people simply being too sensitive...and missing the inherent beauty in skin painting? Or are the people doing the skin painting remiss in ignoring the historical implications of blackface?

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Eva Marcille: Style Questionnaire

Filed under: Celebrity Style , Interviews

Right before Halloween, Moet Hennessy invited me and a short list of twenty nine other journalists to come and taste their brand new cocktail, Black Masquerade, featuring Hennessy's new mixable cognac. The drinks were delicious, the vibe festive and the guests charming.

But nothing really compared to the event's co-host , model and actress Eva Marcille (formerly Eva Pigford), who was there with her equally stunning fiance, actor Lance Gross. I know just what you are thinking: " What did they look like in person?" Just as beautiful as they do in pictures! Even more, Eva, who was decked out in sky-high platform heels, wide-leg light blue jeans and a beautifully draped tan blouse (with a daring scoop back), turned out to be more of a fashionista than I'd imagined.

Naturally, I had to scoop her up for my weekly style questionnaire. Read our one-on-one interview after the jump.

What brands can't you live without?
Christian Louboutin, Yves Saint Laurent and Giuseppe Zanotti.

What's your everyday bag?
Those change all the time. One day it could be an oversized Baboushka Gucci bag, another a Chanel clutch. But because I'm usually in L.A., I don't have to carry a big bag most of the time.

Stacked wedge or stiletto heel?
Stiletto!

Tailored blazer or leather jacket?
Leather jacket!

Why is fashion important?
It's everything!

What one item is going to be in heavy rotation in your wardrobe this season?
Oooh, these Louboutins I just bought! They have pops of purple and blue! I haven't even worn it yet!

Any advice for BV's fashionista readers?
Stay current! In fashion - and really life in general - those who succeed aren't necessarily better than those who don't - they are just better informed.
You bought the wig, searched the accessories and even sprung for the expensive make up you knew you'd only use just this once. But, just when you thought you served up the best Halloween costume, Hollywood did you one better. From the Simmons sisters to Nick Cannon and Mariah Carey, some celebs went all out this Halloween.Nick and Mariah kind of confuse me. Is it just me or aren't they wearing what they always do? As of late, Cannon always seems to be wearing a suit and Carey (since '96) always seems to be wearing ...nothing.

Ditto Selita Ebanks who is giving us the same look - and cornrowed hairstyle - that we've seen in the past.

Rihanna and her bff Coco T(did you know they knew each other?) used the season as the reason to do what they always do: wear very little clothing. I get the whole sex appeal thing, but is it just me or did the concept of them being Tigger (from Winnie the Pooh) and catwoman (?) get totally lost in translation?

On the other Angela Simmons' costume (pictured on the right) offered something different from her usual look. I can't actually figure out if she is a mouse or a French maid, and, while it was silly, it was totally sexy too.

Teyana Taylor, one of my favorite music artists at the moment, echoes the whole silly thing, but it's just not as sweet. What exactly is she? Are they? Is this? We're thinking Sheneneh from 'Martin,' but one can never be sure...

But Terrence J, co-host of BET's 106 & Park, totally took the cake as Lil Wayne. For a second there, I actually thought that was Young Weezy I was staring at.

I wish singer Tyrese could have been more impressive. I get his costume, but I don't get why he chose it.

Who was your fave?
Having worked with members of the entertainment industry's elite such as Jay Z, Mariah Carey, and Missy Elliott, to name a few, If any one knows fashion, it's Ambrose. The founder of her own full-service styling firm, Mode Squad, Inc., and author of every woman's fashion survival guide, 'Effortless Style,' June is a true curator of style. So quite naturally, as soon as I spotted her at the 2009 Black Girls Rock! Award Fundraiser, looking fabulous in an Alexander McQueen coat, YSL shoes, a to-die-for Hermes handbag and chic black shades with honey-tinted lenses she designed herself, I had to pull her aside for a quick fashion chat. She was kind enough to share with BV on Style her Top 5 Fall Fashion Trends, and even celebrated her own recessionista status!

Trend #1: "Every woman should have an over-the-knee boot," she told BV. "Well, I wouldn't say you must have one because if you're short they can make the body look un-proportioned -- I am really particular about silhouettes and proportions -- because it's a trend doesn't necessarily mean it's for you. But if you can pull it off, a thigh-high boot is definitely a must have for the fall."

Stretch Suede Over-The-Knee Boots, ($41.99, gojane.com)

Trend #2: "I love classic looks that can carry over to the next season, and a good military pea coat is a great investment. I just posted a shopping excursion of me shopping at K-mart on Twitter, and I found this great military-parker style jacket, and it was under $99.00! There are a lot of great finds this season!"

Trend #3: "Plaid, and lots of it!"

Plaid Ruffle Top Tunic, ($48.00, ardenb.com)

Trend #4: "Denim, denim, denim! Play around with denim and layer it with all of your luxury fabrics; such as tweed and just have fun with it!"

Denim Jacket, ($36.97, applebottoms.com)

Trend #5: "Accessories are also very prevalent this season, a great pair of shades goes a long way. You must have accessories and your basics, and add the punctuation to your wardrobe that way, because after all, we are in a recession!"

Bonus -- Ambrose on being a recessionista: "I am a recessionista! Why wouldn't I be? Of course I love Zara, Club Monaco, and Chanel, but hey, I am realistic. If like I like it I like it, and if something is made well, and if it's of good quality, then I'll rock it. There are so many respected designers doing lower end lines, everyone from Malandrino, to Anna Sui; you can't help but become a recessionista. . . .and still look fabulous!"

Chris Brown debuted a svelte bod and a new look today in his highly anticipated video 'I Can Transform Ya.' Though the young crooner typically goes for more of a 'schoolboy' vibe, he stepped up his swag, replacing his dorky readers, bowties, and jeans with slick $595 Dior Homme Sunglasses, a $570 Louis Vuitton Inventeur Reversible Damier Graphite belt, and six pack abs:

Skinny Jeans take on a double meaning -- the people behind this brand claim their skinny jeans actually make you look thinner.

Featured on the 'Tyra Show' and 'Oprah,' the pants have a high nylon/elastane content and a "scooped-out" thigh area, all of which apparently gives the appearance of thinner legs, a tighter stomach and a more shapely butt. The jeans retail for about $178.

Are you buying the company's claims. But looking at this photo, you would never guess the drama. As Usher's ex, Tameka Raymond, hammed it up for the paparazzi at a recent Atlanta event, she flashed a sweet smile that belied an alleged fiery temper that some say has ruined her ex-husband's career and his car. This shot of the mom on the red carpet reveals a healthy, happy and very skinny Tameka.

But it's not just the weight loss (am I the only one who remembers her scary plastic surgery moment in Brazil?), it's more so everything else, especially that fabulous dress. The rich purple color simply glows against her skin. The wrap waist accentuates her new figure, and the flirty length plays up her legs. In addition, this divorcee is flexing clear skin, a genuine smile and style so amazing we remember exactly why she was famous before Usher: her career as a celebrity stylist.

I hate to gush, but the last time I saw her she looked...haggard....to say the least. So this is a welcomed surprise! What's led to the transformation though? Is it the divorce settlement? Is it a new love? Or is it new work (of the plastic nature)? Whatever it is, I LOVE it! Really, divorce never looked so good.

Read more from Zandile on her daily fashion blog, The Blay Report.

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Michelle Obama: Glamour Scores Latest First Lady Cover

Not only is she first lady, but Michelle Obama is also America's favorite cover model. While her predecessor, Laura Bush, stuck to the traditional duties and causes of first ladies, Michelle Obama does that (she's particularly invested in promoting healthy living for kids) and finds time to appear on the covers some of the most heavily circulated fashion mags in the world. Mrs. O graces the December cover of Glamour's annual "Women of the Year" issue wearing a drop-waist red dress from her own closet. Inside, she posed for photos with some of her interns and dished to Katie Couric about role models, the value of "cute" men and style standards.

On her role models: "They were the people in my life. My mom, for sure. My dad. The teachers. For me, role-modeling was immediate, it was touchable...Children connect with who is in their lives, present and accounted for...that's why we're trying to encourage moms, teachers, fathers to be that presence in their children's lives, in their communities, because it really makes a difference."

On personal style: "People are always going to have opinions, and people have a right to their opinions, particularly when you're the first lady; you're representing the nation. So I can't be surprised that people are interested. But I've tried to be at peace with the choices that I make first, and then be open to everyone else's reflection."

On cute guys: "Cute's good. But cute only lasts for so long, and then it's, who are you as a person? Don't look at the bankbook or the title. Look at the heart. Look at the soul. ...When you're dating a man, you should always feel good. ...You shouldn't be in a relationship with somebody who doesn't make you completely happy and make you feel whole."

MP3 Player
With all the stress that comes from school and exams, sometimes it's nice to block out the chaos in your life and even your roommate with music. It's nearly impossible to find students walking to class who aren't jamming to tunes.

Budget
Students who enter college often come in at the ripening age of 18. A great time for credit cards. Parents beware, your child may end up ruining their credit at a young age

Alarm Clock
When you're in college you don't have the luxury of getting awaken by your parents. It's now your responsibility to get to class on time so alarm clocks are a must. But keep your roommate in mind. You shouldn't wake him up ever morning with a blow horn alarm.

Cleaning supplies
Now you don't necessarily need to bring in the rubber gloves, mop and gas mask but it doesn't hurt to bring along Clorox all purpose wipes for spills or dust. Vacuums and brooms come in handy too depending if you have a carpeted dorm.

Bedding
What most parents aren't aware of is that most college beds are twin sized but extra long and require special sheets. When shopping keep your eye open for sheets that clearly state 'extra long' or else your child may come up short.

Shower shoes
You really don't know what some people do in the shower these days. College showers are known to be creeping with germs so spare yourself the fungus and purchase flip flops for the shower. You'll thank us later!

Like a snack bar that tides you over between meals, a good pair of tights carries you between seasons. When its too cold to go bare but too warm to bulk up, turn to tights. A good pair of winter weight (thick woolen) ones make short skirts season appropriate and, when they're worn under pants, they can provide a stylish pop of color. This season, American and European runways featured reinvented versions of this winter staple. Chanel gave us lace tights, Cynthia Rowley and BCBG featured shimmer tights while Miu Miu showed tights that were studded with crystals and metal. Free People, one of my favorite contemporary clothing lines, stocks almost all these trends on their website. Check out my top six picks after the jump.(See price and purchase details of tights from first page below!)
Most important, she lists the designers, many of whom were unknown before they were graced by Mrs. O-not to be confused with Jackie O.

Now, in her soon-to-be released book, 'Mrs. O: The Face of Fashion Democracy,' Tomer reveals some of Mrs. O's closely guarded fashion secrets through original photographs, sketches and illustrations. It also highlights glossy images of the first lady and President Barack Obama together on the campaign trail, at the White House and other events. It also shows photos of Sasha and Malia with starlit eyes in the foreground and the background.

"Michelle has great style and we carry great affection for her,'' Tomer, who graduated from Boston University in 2003 with a degree in mathematics, said in an interview with AOL Black Voices.

The 235-hardcover book also features commentary from fashion experts and close-ups of her popular and most talked about outfits, including the red and black Narciso Rodriguez dress she wore on election night, and the teal, v-neck, three-quarter sleeve, sheath dress by Chicago designer Maria Pinto that she wore at the Democratic National Convention. It also features images of brooches, dress patterns, and detailed descriptions of outfits such as the stunning violet cocktail dress with French knot embroidery by designer Jason Wu.

Tomer decided to write the book because of the great response to her blog, which attracts more than 2 million viewers from 221 countries. She launched the site in September 2008 following Obama's stellar performance at the DNC in Denver, she said.

"It was during the DNC when I went from interested in Michelle Obama to captivated,'' Tomer recalled. "That's when I decided to create a blog and I did. She looked phenomenal as she spoke on a national platform. Her feminine style and sensibility was so unexpected from what you expect women to wear in the political realm.''

Assuredly, readers will be wowed by the wealth of information in Tomer's book, uncovered without cooperation from the lady herself or that of one of her elusive stylists, Ikram Goldman of Chicago.

"I received a nice letter from the White House press office declining participation,'' Tomer said. "Ikram said she had gotten my letter and that she wasn't sure if she was going to be able do an interview because she was traveling. When I got back to her, she said she was not going to be able to do the interview.''

Still, Tomer is eager to have people read the book and walk away with a positive attitude about Michelle Obama, who has a magnetic aura of style and erudition.

"What I want people to take away from the book is that it gives a greater back-story to Michelle Obama,'' she said. "If she selects Jason Wu, you get his perspective, his take on what he put into the garment and how he wants women to feel in his clothes. The book also provides a lot of looks and different perspectives. You see a lot more details of dresses and close up of fabrics. I also think it just gives a great appreciation for the woman that is Michelle Obama. It's not just the clothes, but the woman wearing them.''

When she's not blogging Tomer works in advertising for Bartle Bogle Hegarty in New York.

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Six Halloween Costumes That Will Actually Look Good On Your Body

Yeah, that French maid costume is super sexy, but if if you don't have the toned thighs and tummy for that look, it can also be super scary. (I speak from experience, dear reader.) In an attempt to liberate our inner vixen, the good folks who design Halloween costumes seem to have one goal: get you a lot of attention with a little bit of fabric! But on the off chance you don't have rock-hard abs, I've come up with a neat little list of my top six picks for costumes that will flatter and fit.Previous Page: Gatsby Girl Gold; $49.99, This knee skimming sheath is roomy enough to slide right over your belly while showing off your legs. Admittedly, this Pirate Wench, $41.99, costume is very spicy, to say the least. But if you are bold enough to unleash your inner vixen, the pay off is a cinched waist (thanks to the corset) and full, rounded hips. Mercifully, this Grease Cool Sandy costume, $39.99, doesn't squeeze your curves the way hers did, but lightly hugs them, allowing you to look sexy, not overstuffed. This year's 4th Annual Front Row Fashion Show was a spectacular one and included homages to both Michael Jackson and supermodel Naomi Campbell, plus tons of celebrity attendees.

The event featured fashions from Russell Simmons Argyle Culture and Montgomery, just to name a few, and also brought out some of the most talked-about celebrities and taste makers in the industry, such as 'Real Houswives of Atlanta' cast member Sheree Whitfield and Sherri Shepherd, who, as hostess of the event, kept the laughs coming all night long.

BV on Style was on deck to bring you some of the hottest fashion highlights, and reveal just who came out red carpet ready.

As soon as Marlon Jackson stepped onto the red carpet it became quite apparent that he had a powerful presence, and a great sense of style. Marlon looked polished in a black-and-white pin stripe Ralph Lauren suit, with a pink and gray complimentary tie.

As the eldest brother and former member of the Jackson 5, Marlon came out to accept the Avant-Garde award in memory of his beloved brother, Michael Jackson.

"My family is doing as well as to be expected," he told us, "and at this time we are still in mourning, and we truly thank America for their support."

Despite the somber occasion, Jackson took a minute to describe his personal style.

"To be honest with you," he said, "if I like it, I just buy it. I don't go by names or anything. If it wears well, and looks great, I just purchase it."

We've seen this famous pair living it up on a luxurious yacht in the south of France, on the coat of Ibiza, Spain, geographically, in places all around the world, many of which, some of us couldn't begin to even pronounce. So when Naomi Campbell and her billionaire Russian boyfriend, (or as rumors have it, her soon-to-be-husband) Vladislav Doronin; sailed onto the red carpet, decked out in their Sunday's best, all became atwitter. Naomi looked absolutely stunning in Basso. The satin dress and architectural, see-through black jacket with puffed sleeves was to die for! The diva's main squeeze was the perfect complement to her flawless ensemble, as he looked quite dapper in a navy blue-gray suit and white collared shirt.

During her acceptance speech for the Fashion Icon award, the supermodel shared, 'I love fashion, and I am fortunate enough to have 25 years in this business. This year, is the campaign for more women of color to be featured in magazines and advertising. I am grateful for my award, and this is for all women of color.'

As the event host that evening, Sherri Shepherd came red carpet ready, dazzling in a form-fitting sea green dress by Japanese designer, Tadashi, with Judith Ripka jewelry and gold Jimmy Choos.

"I rely on a stylist," Shepherd told us about getting ready for red carpet events. "I need help! My look is sweat pants and something my four-year old can run all over me on, so I absolutely need help!"

As for Atlanta's resident fashionista, Sheree Whitfield? "I am mixing high and low," she said with a dazzling smile. As soon as the reality star turned fashion designer stepped onto the scene, she worked the red carpet like she owned it. After all, "who's 'gon check her, boo?!?" Looking chic in a Helmut Lang jacket, metallic gray American Apparel leggings and a Gucci handbag, Whitfield, without question, was the "all-star diva."

When we asked her about her wardrobe must-have for fall, she said, "Leggings! They go with everything. You can dress them up, you can dress them down. They are very versatile."

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Girls' Night Out: Makeup Tips with Saisha Beecham

Filed under: Celebrity Style , Trends
Have trouble dialing up the makeup drama for a night out with your girls? In what can be an endless whirlwind of trial and error, you may find a jean that fits the thighs but not the waist, the hips but not the butt, and on and on leading to that awful muffin top or crack peeking out the back of your pants -- so not sexy.

But one of our most famous curvies of all, Oprah, has discovered a new brand of premium denim that champions the curvacious -- Cj by Cookie Johnson jeans. Created earlier this year by Cookie Johnson, wife of former pro basketball player Magic Johnson, Oprah crows that Cj jeans are "The perfect jeans for real women with real booties."

"I had a hard time finding a jean to fit me," Cookie has said. "Every time I [would] go to the stores, I put the jeans on and I couldn't get them past my thighs. I thought: 'I'm in good shape. I work out. I eat healthy. Why can't I find a jean to fit me?'"

By taking matters into her own hands, this graduate of Michigan State University with a degree in Retailing (where she met Magic), has taken her frustrations all the way to the bank. By partnering with jean guru Michael Glasser, founder of Seven For All Mankind, Citizens of Humanity, and Rich & Skinny jeans, Cookie made sure that she had all bases covered.

"My partner, Michael Glasser, is an expert at fabrics, and he searched all over and found these wonderful fabrics from Europe that had great stretch to them but were so comfortable at the same time," said Cookie on Oprah.com. "We put a silk waistband inside the waist so they will be nice and comfortable."

The jeans -- which Cookie terms a "denim legging" come in quite a few styles (boyfriend, skinny, etc.) and colors. The line was initially sold exclusively at Nordstrom for between $140 and $200, and has already expanded to Neiman Marcus and Bloomingdales. They come in sizes 2-18.
